The Museum of Greek Folk Musical Instruments Centre for Ethnomusicology “Fivos Anoyanakis”

With the programme series “Musical Villages in the City” (2024–2025), the Museum turns its attention to the culture of everyday life in the city and, for a second consecutive year, seeks to highlight musical communities active in its neighbourhoods. These communities engage with traditional music in a variety of ways—through dancing, singing, playing music, celebrating together and creating social bonds. They are communities that act as bearers of living musical heritage, including music and dance associations, local and regional cultural societies, and musical ensembles that foster and transmit knowledge, learning, memory and, above all, a spirit of collective creativity and participation.

At the same time, the Museum aims to explore the ways in which people in different neighbourhoods of the city seek, through traditional music, a sense of belonging and continuity through time, build relationships, and share common principles and values.

This year, special emphasis is placed on local and regional cultural associations and informal community groups. By cultivating the musical traditions and cultural heritage of their places of origin, their members strengthen not only their connection to those places but, more importantly, their ties with one another, reinforcing collective bonds, shared identity and community action, while shaping their own framework of life within the city.

Within this context, an emblematic historic association of the city—serving as a point of reference for descendants of refugees from the geographically lost homelands of the East—two associations and/or community groups with strong ties to their island homelands, musicians, dance instructors and musical ensembles of the city, together with Greece’s oldest Military Band, were invited by the Museum to present their own “musical village”, their own musical community, through the experiences of their members and their musical and cultural activities. Two journalist-musicians and one actor facilitate discussions with the audience. Each participant has curated, organised and introduced a musical, music-and-dance or other cultural programme, revealing unique facets of the colourful mosaic that makes up the city’s musical everyday life.

This year, the Museum offers a platform for local and regional cultural associations, informal community groups with music and dance activities, as well as networks of musicians active in the neighbourhoods of Athens, highlighting their work and their importance both for musical heritage and for people’s lives in the city.

Six musical and music-and-dance events, accompanied by discussions, will take place between 1 July and 27 September 2025, featuring:

  • three associations and/or community groups whose members share a common place of origin;
  • a group of musicians, researchers and dance instructors who join forces to explore the open community that has emerged in the city around music venues, taverns and summer festivals;
  • musicians gathering at the Museum to honour their teacher and collaborator Nikos Saragoudas;
  • Greece’s oldest Military Band, celebrating 200 years of continuous musical presence and service.

Together, these events will illuminate different aspects of the rich musical life that flourishes in the city.
