“Drosoulites”
A Group of Friends in Piraeus with Their Hearts in Crete
The association “Drosoulites”, dedicated to the history, traditions and folklore of Crete and based in Piraeus, takes part in the programme series Musical Villages in the City 2025 with the music and dance event:
“Drosoulites: A Group of Friends in Piraeus with Their Hearts in Crete”
The Association’s members told us: “The Drosoulites are an association devoted to the history, traditions and folklore of Crete. Beginning with the footsteps of dance, we look beyond them, searching for the ‘soul’ that gave birth to the dances, the music, the songs and the customs—to everything that is Crete. First and foremost, we dance! Not uniformly, like little soldiers, but with our hearts, allowing each person to express themselves through the form and spirit of the dance. At the same time, as enthusiastic students learning from remarkable teachers, we sing and play instruments: rizitika songs, mantinades, the lyra, violin, lute and mandolin. We come together in Piraeus from every corner of Attica, keeping company as people do in Crete. We cook together, celebrate together, read, research and share our knowledge of Crete through communal gatherings. In all these ways, we maintain a holistic image of Crete—one that embraces its many dimensions and does not focus solely on a single aspect, such as dance. Because to truly understand tradition, we must experience it with all our senses.”
